When I saw this sign, the first thing that came to my mind was a song sung years back by Nancy Sinatra:
These boots are made for walkin
And that’s just what they’ll do
One of these days
These boots are gonna walk all over you.
There’s been a few times when I have wanted to sing that verse to someone who has treated me unfairly. They just walked all over me, so expect one day I will do the same. But I know that is not how God works. When you hurt, it is so hard not to get those boots out.
Next, I thought about how many meetings or conversations that I have had that I wanted to get my boots and wade through. It’s pretty deep in here – let me put my boots on. Let’s just keep it real. Let’s be honest. Listen. We really don’t want to get our boots out.
Last, I thought about how sometimes others will give someone the boot. Before you give someone the boot, make sure you have the facts straight. Make sure you have listened to all sides. Make sure that there has been appropriate due process. It’s easy to give someone the boot. It’s harder to hear and find solutions to problems. Also don’t forget to look at what part you may have played in this boot.
I do like boots, but sometimes I want to throw those boots away. I’d like to get rid of the boots that are made for walking, the boots that wade through deep sh…, and the boots that throw someone out without proper thought and due process.
