How is York different from other organizations that help in schools such as "Communities in Schools"?
- Number one, we work on behalf of the child and the parents. We do not work on behalf of the school.
- Some organizations partner with the schools so they can provide services. We do not partner with schools or districts. While our goal is to work with schools, we are an advocate for children and families so we do not enter into partnerships that might inhibit our advocacy.
- We are NOT involved in mental health counseling. We build relationships to support children in the school setting. From our observations and discussions with students – we may suggest that Communities in Schools or another organization also be used to support the child if services are not already being provided.
- York develops and suggests an individualized plan for the child and then monitors the plan. This is very different from most organizations working with schools. Other organizations may take their lead from the school. We take our lead from the student and the family. If the teacher wishes to become involved – we welcome this.
- The parent/guardian component is very important to York. We go beyond signing forms to gain permission to work with students. The family is very involved in the plan.
- Our goal is to work with the whole child not just working with them on reading or just math. The classroom observations and lunchtime discussions with students help us in identifying needs and strengths. We try to make it our business to know about friendships, troubles, interests…
- We keep the parent informed and seek their guidance. With facts presented, the parents and the students make decisions about our work.
- York will attend parent teacher conferences and any other school meetings where parents feel that they need support. During these meetings we listen carefully to help families make informed decisions. Parents make all final decisions.
- We believe that most classroom teachers know their students best in the school setting, and encourage parents and students to work with the classroom teacher. Our goal is to use all available resources in a way that helps children succeed.
- With parent permission, we can talk about religion and the impact on a person’s life. We can encourage participation in religious activities such as youth group, worship, Sunday School…
